(With Gold Leaf Gilding)
The Frame Construction -
First the frame base is constructed, using furniture grade hardwood.
All four joints of the base are glued with biscuits used as reinforcement.
The base is clamped together for 24 hours until glue is fully cured.
After the glue is cured the upright edge is added to the base.
Furniture grade hardwoods are also used for the upright edge.
Each upright edge is individually measured and cut by hand, with a hand miter backsaw.
I find the hand backsaw miter is the only tool that gives me the accuracy needed.
After the piece is cut to size glue is applied to all joints between the base
and other uprights. The piece is tacked into place with a nail gun.
After all four pieces are in place they are clamped and nails are recessed into wood with a nail set.
After the frame is left clamped for 24 hours while the glue used for the uprights cure I add the molding stop.
The molding stop is the front piece of molding that covers the edge of the painting.
The molding is applied with the same process as the uprights, except clamps are not used.
After the glue is cured I carve the design in the front edge of the upright & molding.
The small holes left by the nail set is then filled with wood filler.
Then the front, sides, top, & bottom surfaces are sanded.
A coat of Gesso is applied to all the sanded surfaces.
Note: At this time I may added a coat of Gesso with a filler.
The filler gives the Gesso a textured look to the front surface of the base.
When the Gesso is dry, all smooth surfaces are sanded with a very fine sand paper.
The front surface of the upright and molding gets three or more coats of a red primer on top of the Gesso.
Each coat is sanded with a very fine sand paper.
This process is used to prepare the surface for Gilding.
Once the surface quality is acceptable for gilding, the size is applied.
Gold leaf is then placed on the sized surface with a static brush.
The gold leaf is then burnished with cotton until gilding is complete.
All other exposed surfaces of the frame are covered with a liquid gold.
At the bottom of this page is a drawing showing the frame construction.
